Mushroom Compost

What is mushroom compost?

The medium that mushrooms are grown in which is a mixture of agricultural materials such as:

  • Straw from horse stalls
  • Ground corn cobs
  • Cottonseed hulls
  • Cocoa shells
  • Peat moss
  • As well as other organic substances

After the mushrooms are harvested this organic material is process into the bi-product know as mushroom compost.

General Uses When Used Properly:

  • Improve plant growth in poor soils
  • Compost added to existing soil
  • improves the structure of clay soil
  • Reduce surface crusting and compaction
  • improves drainage
  • Increases microbial activity of soil
  • provides nutrients to plants(reduces need for fertilizer)

A good quality mushroom compost usually resembles a dark topsoil, has an earthy aroma with a loose crumbley texture.
